Wings are a symbol of hope. The earliest known representation of angels with wings 
dates to the time of Theodosius, 379-395 AD.  They “leave the heights and the most 
elevated dwelling to approach human nature,” according to St. John Chrysostom.  [Also 
known for his denunciation of abuse of authority.]  From that time on, angels have been 
represented with wings, a symbol of their sublimity.
