The question of Homer's existence dates to classical antiquity, and has been much debated in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The Ancient Greek poet, 8th C. BCE, is traditionally considered to be the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, foundational works of ancient Greek literature. While it is likely these epic tales existed and evolved over centuries of Greek oral tradition, Homer (if he was a real person) is credited with 
capturing them in the written versions we recognize today.
