Born in Germany in 1770, Beethoven moved to Vienna and spent most of his life there. His innovations in style and emotion set him apart from other composers of his era — fire, brilliance, fantasy and emotional depth are especially apparent in Pathetique from 1799 and Moonlight Sonata in 1801. Unlike composers of the preceding generation, Beethoven was not creating for nobility but was the hero of the masses. Ten thousand people attended his funeral in 1827.
