Patron Saint of Children, coopers, sailors, fishermen, merchants, broadcasters, the falsely accused, repentant thieves, brewers, pharmacists, archers and pawnbrokers.
Known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession.
His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus through Sinterklaas.
He attended the First Council of Nicaea; the 151st attendee was listed as "Nicholas of Myra of Lycia" (at that time he was the Bishop of Myra, the town where he was born).
The modern city of Demre, Turkey is built near the ruins of the saint's home town of ancient Myra.
